About Us

Our mission is to support and empower legal defense teams with high-quality investigative services, providing attorneys confidence that their counsel rests on sound, validated evidence.

At Kirby Investigations, we provide comprehensive investigative support to legal criminal and civil defense teams representing individuals before state and federal courts in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia.

Founded and led by Pat Kirby, an investigator with over 16 years of experience, we deliver timely, court-ready evidence tailored to the needs of each case, including witness interviews and statements, research, subpoena service, discovery review, and more. We work closely with attorneys to uncover inconsistencies, validate facts, and strengthen case strategy, providing peace of mind that the information underpinning their defense is reliable and gathered in conformity with the most stringent evidentiary standards.

Owner and lead investigator Pat Kirby has over 16 years of experience in providing full-scope investigative services to attorneys representing indigent clients in serious felony and misdemeanor cases in Washington, D.C., including on several high-profile cases.

As a supervisory investigative specialist at the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia (PDSDC), Pat investigated a variety of criminal charges, including homicide and assault. In this role, he also served as training coordinator–providing critical investigative trainings and professional development to PDSDC’s investigative division–and internship supervisor for PDSDC’s coveted Criminal Law Internship Program.

Prior to his tenure as a supervisor, Pat served as a staff investigator at PDSDC, where he investigated primarily Felony 1 cases for adults and juveniles. Pat also investigated lower-level felonies and misdemeanors and provided mitigation support, specializing in not-guilty-by-reason-of-insanity cases.

Pat recognizes that each case he works on is unique. To that end, he approaches each case with an open mind, runs down difficult investigative leads with tenacity and tact, and uses creativity to find novel solutions to problems–all to equip attorney teams with solid, trustworthy evidence to ensure clients receive the most thorough, robust defense possible.

Pat has a B.A. in Criminal Justice from George Washington University. He lives in Washington, D.C., with his family, and enjoys exercise, the outdoors, and spending time with his loved ones.
